2. CPCL JEA CBT Exam Pattern

The written Computer Based Test has two distinct sections:

Part 1 – General Aptitude (50 Qs / 50 Marks)

The official notification specifies these four broad areas:

  • Verbal Ability (English Grammar & Comprehension)
  • General Knowledge (Current Affairs, Science & Economy)
  • Reasoning / Logical Deduction (Puzzles, Series, Syllogisms)
  • Numerical Ability (Arithmetic, Algebra & Data Interpretation)

Part 2 – Discipline Knowledge (70 Qs / 70 Marks)

Questions will test technical diploma engineering concepts based on post applied for:

  • Production (CPCL01): Chemical & Petroleum Engineering
  • Mechanical (CPCL02): Machine Design & Thermal Power
  • Electrical (CPCL03): Machines, Circuits & Switchgear
  • Instrumentation (CPCL04): Process Control & PLC Automation
Important Note: CPCL's official notification does not provide a fixed subject-wise question distribution within the 50 General Aptitude or 70 Discipline Knowledge questions. Therefore, candidates should prepare all modules comprehensively.

3. Section-Wise Marks & Question Distribution

Section Questions Marks Weightage (%)
Part A: General Aptitude 50 50 41.67%
Part B: Discipline Knowledge 70 70 58.33%
Total CBT Question Paper 120 120 100.00%

Total Exam Time: 120 Minutes. Candidates therefore have an average of approximately 1 minute per question. Because the technical section contains 70 questions, candidates should manage time carefully between aptitude and technical sections.

4. CPCL Negative Marking Scheme & Calculation

There is negative marking in the Computer Based Test. For every incorrect answer:

  • Correct Answer: +1.00 Mark
  • Incorrect Answer: −0.25 Mark (¼ penalty)
  • Unattempted Question: 0.00 Mark

Numerical Calculation Example:

Suppose an applicant attempts 100 questions out of 120:

  • Correct Answers: 80 questions × (+1) = 80 marks
  • Incorrect Answers: 20 questions × (−0.25) = −5 marks
  • Unattempted Questions: 20 questions × 0 = 0 marks
Net Final Score = 80 − (20 × 0.25) = 75.00 Marks (out of 120)

5. CPCL JEA Minimum Qualifying Marks

Candidates must obtain at least the prescribed cut-off percentage in the CBT to be considered for shortlisting:

Candidate Category Minimum CBT Qualifying % Minimum Required Score
General / EWS / OBC (NCL) 40% 48 Marks (out of 120)
SC / ST / PwBD (against reserved positions) 35% (5% Relaxation) 42 Marks (out of 120)

Important: Meeting the minimum qualifying percentage does not automatically guarantee selection. Candidates must also score high enough to fall within the 1:3 shortlisting ratio for the SPPT stage.
